Olga

  • Russian Gift Basket including, a 5-piece matryoshka set, the biggest one 6" high. A matryoshka doll is a set of hand-painted wooden dolls placed one inside another. The doll can be palled apart in the middle to show a smaller copy inside, which has another one inside it, and so on. There are several versions of the origin of the word "matryoshka", most popular "mat’" ("mother") and "matryona" ("a corpulent Russian woman"). The first matryoshkas are said to have appeared in Russian at the end of the 19th century. In 1900, M.A. Mamontova, a wife of Russian industrialist Savva Mamontov presented it at the World Exhibition in Paris and it received the Bronze medal. Later, the hand-crafted wooden nest dolls became more and more popular, and started being considered national Russian art. Most often, they show girls in sarafans (traditional Russian dress, worn by peasant girls) and kokoshniks (headdress), but the themes can range from depicting an older woman (sometimes also called "babushkas", a Russian word for "grandmothers") to showing a sequence of Russian or world political leaders. Some matryoshkas have a very high quality and are exhibited in the world museums and private collections; one key-chain "Matryoshkas" (solid), one brown shawl (Orenburg style - 32”x32”). There are two major types of Russian shawls, named after the regions where they have been originally manufactured: Orenburg and Pavlovo-Posad. The history of Orenburg shawls dates to 17th century; they are hand-woven, and of so fine quality that they can be drawn through a wedding band. They are warm and comfortable enough to wrap in while drinking a cup of coffee and/or cuddling with a book on your laps, and elegant and beautiful enough to wear with an evening dress at a party; Postcards (5 pieces) with Minks, capital of Belarus.

  • Russian Gift Basket including, one key-chain “Matryoshkas” (solid), one white shawl (Orenburg style – 32”x32”); a Pavlovo-Posad style shawl. Pavlovo-Posad shawls have hand-printed designs, in many cases floral ones, and most often are worn around shoulders, but can be used as a head piece, or if you want to add originality, tied on the hips; a Birch-bark hair-pin. Since 18th century, the birch bark has been applied for decoration purposes, but even in earlier times Russian masters used it for making domestic utensils (buckets, for example). The decorative style is created by interlacing birch stripes, or by cutting and stamping. There are jewelry and letter boxes decorated with birch bark, or even furniture; a hand-painted lacquer brooch and hair-pin; a Jewelry box decorated with straw appliqué; and Books--The Moscow Vector by American bestseller author Robert Ludlum and an Easy Russian, Phrase book and Dictionary by Ann Rolbin, as well as Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky, one of the most famous Russian classics.

  • A Russian Basket, including an Orenburg style shawl (brown, 32"x32"); a Lacquer box, 4.5"x2"x2.5". First lacquer boxes appeared in Russia in the beginning of 18th century and demanded extreme skills and patience to create. The most famous art schools of Russian lacquer boxes are Palekh, Mstera, Fedoskino, and Kholui. Each box is polished with lacquer, which explains the name and the fact that the surface of the box is very smooth. Usually, a box is covered with several coats of black lacquer, dried after each one, then with several coats of red lacquer, again dried after each one, and then clear lacquer. Afterwards, the artist receives it and does the painting. Next, the golden work is applied, and the box goes into additional polishing. Normally, it takes from 45 to 60 days to complete the box; a Chess set decorated with straw appliqué. Straw-weaving and appliqué is an ancient art in Belarus. Straw appliqué originated as an art of intarsia, a type of inlaid work, and instead of expensive pearl or metal materials the straw started been used to decorate objects, in this case, either furniture or wall carpets. Nowadays, one can find panels, plaques, medals, boxes, caskets, bracelets, chess sets, etc. decorated with straw appliqué, many of them exquisite. The choice of this material had many reasons: straw is resistant to pressure, flexible, cheap, and beautiful. Earlier, the straw and grain was also believed to have fertile powers, and in old culture the last sheaf from the field was often kept until the next harvest. The range of objects woven from straw is enormous: spiders, dolls, hats, even masks. There has been a decline in straw art, but its rebirth started in 1960's, and new techniques were added to the traditional ones; a Hand-knit wallet with a shoulder strap; a Hand-knit sarafan (dress); a Willow-woven plate. Willow rods are used to create baskets, furniture, even sculptures; Napkins (2 pieces) made from flax, a small set of matryoshkas (see description above), and a lacquer hair pin.

Note: The woolen shawls (Orenburg) should never, ever be dried in the dryer.

Item #2 — Full Manuscript critique
USA Today bestselling author Cathy Clamp (http://www.ciecatrunpubs.com/media.htm ) is offering an in-depth, full manuscript critique in any of the following genres/subgenres: Romance (with the exception of Regency, Inspirational and Short Contemporary—sorry, don’t know the elements well enough to evaluate), mystery, thriller/suspense, erotica, science fiction, fantasy, or horror. What you’ll get:  1) A confirming email when I receive the manuscript (either by mail or email. We’ll talk after the auction.) 2) an email/letter (your choice) that discusses: a. The plot as a whole and whether there are any "plot holes" that need to be fixed; b. The believability of the characters and whether I empathize with them. If I don’t, I’ll make suggestions on what might make them more believable; c. Whether any parts of the book drag or move too quickly; d. Whether the time line of the book makes sense and whether there are unbelievable timing issues (such as driving from New York to Denver by car in 8 hours, or the people failing to eat for four days without getting grumpy or passing out!); e. The believability of the GENRE aspect and whether any of the required elements need better explanation; f. The believability of the ROMANCE aspect (if any is included), plus sex scenes, if any—and whether I would believe the characters are falling in love. If an erotica, I will discuss whether the book qualifies FOR an erotica line, or whether it would be better served marketing as a "sexy romance" and why; g. Discussion of whether the dialogue is believable and consistent from character to character; and h. Discussion of places where you’re "telling" versus "showing" and ways you might fix it.

An original acrylic painting by Artist Geoffrey Crowe -- The painting is 48" x 56" as painted. The history of this work ties to the people and culture of Puerto Rico. Every year the Bacardi Company holds a festival on their grounds to mark the holidays. There are hundreds of booths with crafts and food. Nightly they have live entertainment and it’s a great place just to roam and enjoy time with your family. This father and daughter struck me as a great representation of this day by the simple act of enjoying a meal together.

The Artist:

On the art side I began painting a little over four years ago at the age of 40. My first exhibition was titled En Accion, which is simply In Action. It was a series celebrating the joy of soccer for children. Today I live in Ireland with my wife, who is here on a business assignment.

From International Plot Consultant Martha Alderson

#1 -- A 2 hour phone plot consultation and a Plot Planner of the writer's individual project. The writer will be asked to send a completed Character Emotional Development Plot Profile for the main character at least 2 days before the phone meeting. During the plot consultation, Martha takes notes on a Plot Planner. Typically, the first session involves plotting out all the scenes or chapters of the project focusing primarily on the Dramatic Action plot line. If there is time, the Character Emotional Development plot line is considered. After the consultation, a Plot Planner is sent to the writer so she can revisit the work. The Plot Planner pushes aside the words so that the writer can actually  "see" into the plot and structure of the story itself.

The package is worth $240.

#2 Scene Tracker Kit (value $45.00).
Dramatically cut the time it takes to finish your story. The Scene  Tracker Kit includes everything you need to create scenes that are full of conflict, tension and suspense, grounds the reader in place and time,  and advances the character emotional development plot line, dramatic action plot line and the thematic significance plotline. Along with BLOCKBUSTER PLOTS Pure & Simple and the Scene Tracker Template CD, you can enjoy the Scene Tracker Writers Workshop from the comfort of your own home.

Bio: Martha Alderson, M.A, author of BLOCKBUSTER PLOTS Pure & Simple, helps writers of all ages find the structure of their stories.
