The 5th Annual Online Auction for Diabetes Research weighs in at $270,611.
In a year when most fund-raisers are down by 30%, we set a new record. Thanks to all my friends, fans and publishing associates for supporting my efforts in this regard. So far, in all five years, we've raised a total of $762,298 for research. Next year, we'll break the $1 million mark! Congratulations to Laura Troutman, who placed the most bids over all. She won an amazing HP Touch computer system and an autographed ARC of THE PERFECT COUPLE. Check out the Auction Awards. Everyone who participates is a hero, but some people get really enthused and go above and beyond the call. Brenda Visits the Diabetes Research Institute It was amazing to tour the DRI, meet the scientists who are working so hard there and see firsthand the progress they are making toward a cure. From efforts to encapsulate beta cell implants, so that the body's immune system won't destroy them, to figuring out a way to save the new cells that are being generated by the body without implantation, the DRI is hot on the trail of saving my son and others like him--and putting the multi-billion dollar industry of those who sell diabetes supplies out of business! Go DRI! (If you can believe it, I have to pay $1500/month for health insurance and diabetes supplies. This, of course, is the least of my worries when it comes to keeping my son well, but it's certainly no small amount.)
